CoPilot iOS Update is here with “just drive” mode, mobile data controls and updated maps!

Dear Apple fans – our latest CoPilot update (v 9.4.0.276) for iOS is now available with  more improvements, fixes and some great new features. PLUS customers in Europe and North America get free updated maps too!

What is new in this update? Plenty!

  • NEW: connection settings with an offline switch. We have added a new settings menu that put you in complete control of how, when and why CoPilot can connect to the mobile web. You can even switch-off all connected features for true offline use and peace of mind.apple-maps-iphone5-copilot
  • NEW: Just Drive mode. It is not always necessary to have turn by turn directions and voice guidance when driving, particularly when you already know the route, but it would be helpful to have map-only mode to keep your bearings and receive warnings about speed cameras and speed limits. So we’ve developed a new map-only mode that does exactly that. Just Drive mode removes the ‘add destination button’ to give you a larger map view, adds a new on-screen compass and yet still provides you with the alerts and local info that you’ll be familiar with from our turn by turn modes.
  • Closed road warnings come to ActiveTraffic™. If our traffic feed says there is a closed road on your route, CoPilot will display a pop-up screen to warn you. You can then choose an alternative route or – if you wish – ignore the warning.
  • Automatic Cloud Backup:  CoPilot will now automatically backup your settings, favourites and recent destinations for easy restore if you need to reinstall the app or move to a new phone.
  • Other Fixes: we’ve made a number of under the hood improvements throughout the app, in particular to tunnel mode to make it more reliable.

Important: CoPilot App Updates require iOS 6

Apple have made some changes to the requirements for detecting devices and we’ve had to make some changes which mean that all future app updates will require devices that have iOS 6.0 or greater.

The vast majority of our customers will be unaffected as every iPhone currently compatible with CoPilot has iOS 6. If you have an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S with iOS 5 then we recommend updating it to iOS 6 to continue using CoPilot.

For iPad (1st Generation) customers who are unable to update to a newer OS version: you can of course continue to use your CoPilot app exactly as before, but will be unable to update to a newer version of CoPilot on that device. You may wish to download the current app from the App Store to iTunes on your computer as a backup should you need it, as you may be unable to download and install it from the App Store to your device.

If you get a new iPad in the future, you’ll be able to simply redownload from the App Store and login and continue using it – and get future app updates.

We hope you like our latest update. Thank you to all of you who have sent us essential feedback, reported issues and shared great ideas with us! We will keep on improving the app and would appreciate it if is your could drop us a line in our user forum if you spot something or think we could improve in some aspects: https://support.copilotgps.com .

CoPilot® navigation apps get new mobile data controls and ‘Just Drive’ mode

London 27th June 2013:  ALK Technologies, the leading provider of car navigation and GeoLogistics™ software, is pleased to announce a new update for its award-winning CoPilot® sat nav apps for iOS and Android.

The update (v9.4.2) brings new connectivity settings to CoPilot that give users complete control over how, why and when the app accesses the mobile Internet. Drivers can avoid unnecessary data charges by selecting which of CoPilot’s Live features they keep active, or they can choose to navigate completely offline.

The update also adds a new ‘Just Drive’ guidance mode to make it easier for drivers to keep their bearings when navigating without a final destination entered. This frequently requested feature combines a full-screen map for optimal driver orientation, with essential on-road information including safety camera warnings and speedometer.

“We are always working to enhance CoPilot to address real-world driver issues such as mobile data usage, driver distraction and reliable maps”, said David Quin, head of consumer applications at ALK Technologies. “We know that people are particularly concerned about the cost of using the mobile internet when roaming abroad and even at home, so we’ve added in-app connectivity controls for complete peace of mind when navigating with your smartphone. The CoPilot community also tells us that they don’t always need voice directions when driving, and our new “Just Drive” mode was developed in direct response to that feedback.”

New features in CoPilot version 9.4.2 include:

  • New Connectivity settings and offline switch: CoPilot users can enjoy complete control over in-app data usage.
  • Just Drive mode: New map-only guidance view with on-screen speedometer, compass, safety camera alerts and speed limit warnings.
  • Closed road alert: If CoPilot’s ActiveTraffic™ service detects a closed road on your route you can easily choose an alternative route to avoid lengthy delays.
  • Automatic Cloud Backup: CoPilot can now automatically save your settings, favourites and recent destinations for easy restore if you need to reinstall the app or move to a new phone
  • Completely updated automotive-grade street maps for European and North America users
  • Swiftkey support for Android: Fixes a compatibility issue with the incredibly popular Swiftkey keyboard.
  • Other Fixes: We’ve made a number of under the hood improvements throughout the app, in particular to tunnel mode to make it more reliable.

CoPilot v9.4.2 is available immediately for Android as a free update for existing users through Google Play and will be available for iOS users shortly.

CoPilot update brings ‘just drive’ mode, mobile data controls and updated maps

CoPilot_Just-Drive

Dear CoPilot’ers, we are excited to announce our latest CoPilot update for Android and iOS. As ever, our dev team has been working tirelessly to bring you more improvements, fixes and some great new features. PLUS customers in Europe and North America get free updated maps too!

The CoPilot update is available immediately for Android as a free update for existing users through Google Play and will be available for iOS users shortly.

Important information for iOS users

What is new in this update? Plenty!

  • NEW: connection settings with an offline switch. We know that many of you are worried about the costs of using mobile data abroad .. and even at home , and so now we’ve added a new settings menu that put you in complete control of how, when and why CoPilot can connect to the mobile web. You can even switch-off all connected features for true offline use and peace of mind.copilot-data-settings-iphone4_UK
  • NEW: Just Drive mode. As many of you have repeatedly told us, you don’t always need turn by turn directions and voice guidance when driving, particularly when you already know the route. However you told us that you do still like to use CoPilot in map-only mode to help keep your bearings and receive warnings about speed cameras and speed limits.
  • Automatic Cloud Backup: another popular request, CoPilot can now automatically backup your settings, favourites and recent destinations for easy restore if you need to reinstall the app or move to a new phone. It’s one less thing for you to remember.
  • Swiftkey v3 support for Android: we love Swiftkey’s Android keyboard, and we know we are not alone: it’s one of the most popular apps on Google Play globally. However we’ve run in to  compatibility problems since Swiftkey launched v3 which has made it difficult to add certain characters into CoPilot. It’s fixed now.
  • Other Fixes: we’ve made a number of under the hood improvements throughout the app, in particular to tunnel mode to make it more reliable.

We hope you enjoy the summer to the max (assuming the weather improves!)

Happy travels from team CoPilot.

CoPilot at Apple WWDC 2013

Alex Weisberger, Software Engineer Extraordinaire – I was excited to attend Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference the past week in San Francisco, CA, on behalf of the CoPilot team. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the conference as I had never been to the west coast or a developer’s conference before. The ambience was great and slightly overwhelming as there was so much to see and do at the WWDC. Luckily, I was surrounded by like-minded people who were as interested as I in getting as much out of the conference as they can.

As a CoPilot developer,  I found the new features and design that Apple had in store very interesting and I was excited of the possibilities iOS 7 can bring to maximize the CoPilot experience in iPhones and iPads. Especially the automatic App updates were particularly interesting as they would ensure you’ll have the latest version of CoPilot on your device. However,  for use it is still important to tell you what new features and functions our updates have, and we will of course  continue to provide What’s New information on our blogs and social media to keep you updated on the latest improvements, fixes and cool new features.

Here at CoPilot , we’re very excited about the iOS 7 and can’t want to explore and investigate the possibilities  the new APIs bring to provide our iOS users a great experience while using our apps. iOS 7 will be available  in the fall and we can’t wait to see how CoPilot will function within it.

Developer Perspective – Bringing CoPilot to Windows Phone 8

Rob IrvingRob Irving, Senior Software Engineer, ALK Technologies –  For the past 5+ years as an ALK developer I’ve watched the smartphone ecosystem change at an incredible pace. CoPilot first began over 10 years ago on the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile platforms in the days when an ‘app’ was a ‘mobile application’. Years later we were able to move to iOS and Android as those platforms expanded the Smartphone consumer market. The release of Windows Phone 7 really excited me, but limitations of the SDK prevented ALK from being able to develop a proper CoPilot application for the platform. It wasn’t that we didn’t want to support the platform, but rather it was practically impossible for us to do so in a reasonable amount of time. Simply, we would not have been able to create an experience worthy of the CoPilot name.

That’s why I was so excited when Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 8 SDK that would allow native app development. From that moment onwards we began planning to bring CoPilot to the Windows Phone 8 platform.

Microsoft publicly released the Windows Phone 8 SDK at their Build 2012 conference last October – right at the same time that US East Coast had just been hit by hurricane Sandy. My community didn’t suffer as much as many others did in New Jersey, only experiencing a few downed trees during the storm, however ALK’s HQ in Princeton was badly affected and many of us had to work remotely for a few days. This actually gave me the chance to devote time to install the Windows Phone developer tools and study the SDK documentation in detail. Work then began in earnest to bring CoPilot to life on this exciting new platform for us.

Now after 6+ months of late nights coding, and extensive testing on some great Windows Phones such as the Lumia 920, I and the rest of the ALK dev team are pleased and proud to see CoPilot become available to all Windows Phone 8 users on the Windows Phone store https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/app/copilot-gps/ec860657-f89d-4740-866b-97c44b49a20c

So what’s next?

The CoPilot dev team are incredibly passionate about the products we work on, and we always pay great attention to the feedback we receive from our customers through the app stores, social channels and of course our support forum. Now that we are up and running on WP8 you can be certain that we will work continuously to improve the app, so if you have any suggestions or comments please let us know.

I hope you enjoy CoPilot on Windows Phone 8. I certainly enjoyed the challenge of supporting this new OS for CoPilot.

Reaching a New Destination – CoPilot Europe is Moving Home!

ALK

It’s been over 10 since we first opened our CoPilot Europe office back in 2003, and we’ve been based in the same building in Bloomsbury Square ever since.

Where to?

From small beginnings (initially with a team of just 5), CoPilot has grown dramatically – both in terms of the team and of course the number of consumer and professional drivers we are guiding every day.

Over the years we’ve moved around our current building, taking on additional space as the business has grown, but now it’s time to move to a bigger and better home.

Bye, Bye Bloomsbury, Hello City!

From June, we’ll be swapping Bloomsbury for the City with a new base in Farringdon, giving us the space and facilities to best serve our customers and take CoPilot forward as the mobile navigation market grows.

Bloomsbury Square

But as we pack-up ready for the big move, here’s a reminder of some of the CoPilot Bloomsbury landmarks:

2003: ALK Technologies Europe opens office in Bloomsbury Square

  • 2004: early beginnings selling PDA + CoPilot bundles through Tottenham Court Road dealers and online retailers. BMW launches branded sat nav PDA with CoPilot
  • 2005: Motorola launches the A780, the world’s first smartphone with integrated GPS, a car kit and CoPilot pre-installed. We win Microsoft’s worldwide mobility partner of the year.
  • 2006: CoPilot launches at T-Mobile UK, offered free with a phone
  • 2007: CoPilot launches at O2 UK, pre-installed with the XDA Orbit
  • 2008: CoPilot pre-installed on HTC Windows Mobile devices throughout Europe. Royal Mail chooses CoPilot in the world’s largest ever commercial sat nav deployment
  • 2009: CoPilot launched on Android and iPhone. Becomes UK’s highest grossing iOS app of the year after just 6 months.
  • 2010: CoPilot selected by The AA as navigation partner for AA Sat Nav
  • 2011: CoPilot version 9 platform launched. CoPilot selected by BMW for BMW Link app project.
  • 2012: CoPilot GPS app launches with 1m downloads within 60 days. ALK wins Honeywell ISV Partner of the Year. CoPilot is selected by Renault for it’s Twingo app project
  • 2013: ALK becomes part of Trimble Navigation Inc. ALK wins Motorola European Solutions Provider of the Year. CoPilot GPS exceeds 4.5m downloads and CoPilot for Windows Phone 8 announced.

Thanks Bloomsbury, you’ve been fantastic and we’ve many happy memories as the business has evolved. Now for the next decade in the CoPilot story …
