Highlights from Apple’s WWDC 2017

Tim Cook took to the stage at the annual Apple Developer Conference yesterday to introduce iOS 11, the latest major version of their mobile operating system which powers iPhones and iPads. There are lots of system-wide refinements and new features. See the highlights below:

Do Not Disturb While Driving Mode

The iPhone can detect when you may be driving and automatically silence your incoming alerts and notifications. This should make for a safer driving experience and to not be interrupted while at the wheel. You can turn this mode off in case you are a passenger in the car for example. Driver safety has always been central to CoPilot so we’re pleased to see Apple add driver-safety feature directly in iOS.

Augmented Reality Platform

There are new functions available to developers to build AR apps using the device’s inbuilt motion sensors and cameras. The demos they showed looked really impressive.

A Redesigned App Store

For the first-time since its launch, the App Store is getting an overhaul, similar to the look and feel of Apple’s own Music and News apps. There will be a new ‘Today’ section highlighting an app of the day, along with collections of suggested apps and a new section dedicated to just Games which offers highlighted in-app purchases. Plus app store listings can now include additional videos.

iPad Productivity Features

A whole range of iPad-only features were demo’ed including drag & drop, a new app switcher for improved multitasking, customisable dockbar at the bottom which can now have more apps. There’s an improved QuickType keyboard with suggestions based on Apple News articles you’ve read and quicker access to numbers and punctuation. Instant Markup allows you to markup a PDF or screenshot with notes and there’s a new document scanner which can automatically crop the edges. In all it makes the iPad a more productive device for working between multiple apps.

Redesigned Control Center

The layout has been rearranged and now fits on one screen and implements 3D touch for additional options, sliders to adjust volume and brightness. Many of the options are now customisable for the first time too.

Smarter Siri

There are new male and female voices which sound more natural and a new learning system will adapt to the way you use your device to offer more personalised responses based on the time, your location, your interests and Safari favourites etc. A new translation feature for Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish be available (in beta) too.

Improved Messages App

A drawer at the bottom offers options for stickers and message apps. You can now use the app to send money to contacts directly via Apple Pay.

iOS 11 is expected to be released this autumn.

Apple also announced new iPad Pro models with improved brighter screens which now supports HDR video and faster refresh rates along with faster processors, improved cameras, and Touch ID 2. The 9.7” model has been replaced with a 10.5” screen model which has a similar sized footprint and smaller bezels.

The 5 Best Xmas Markets in Europe

What better way to get in the festive mood than to sip from a warm cup of mulled wine and browse for handcrafted gifts in a Xmas market? We have selected our top 5 Xmas markets across Europe to get you in the spirit. What is your favourite?

1. Edinburgh

edinburgh-1289078_1920

Visit Edinburgh this winter for a full family program of holiday events. See a festive theatre play, find your way through the Christmas tree maze, climb on an ice wall, try  some regional products from the Scottish Market or go ice skating. We are sure you won’t get bored.

2. Barcelona

Sunglasses, beach and sangria? Barcelona might not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking about Xmas, but the city has much to offer during the festive season. Right next to the Catedral de Barcelona visit the Fira de Santa Llúcia Xmas market, take a glimpse at the big Caga Tió display and get a Caganer of your choice as a souvenir. The Catalans would definitely win the prize for strangest Xmas traditions if there were one.

3. Vienna

town-hall-1332069_1920

If you are in Vienna in November and December, there is no escaping Xmas markets. You will find stands on every street corner offering  a variety of snacks such as Lebkuchen, warm cidre and mulled wine as well as artisan gifts. The best markets are: Rathaus Christkindlmarkt, Spittelberg Weihnachtsmarkt and “Winter im MQ”. Remember to bring your hat, gloves and warm shoes as temperatures can easily fall below zero.

4. Stockholm

Scandinavia feels like the natural epicentre of Xmas in Europe, so the capital of Sweden must be represented in our top 5. Head to the Royal Palace, browse the craft stalls and snack on some pepparkaka gingerbread to enjoy some real Nordic flair. This destination has the highest likelihood of snow, so come prepared for cold weather.

5. Strasbourg

The “Christkindelsmärik” in Strasbourg dates back to 1570 making it the oldest Xmas market in Europe. Head to the capital of Alsace for beautiful architecture, hearty food and a variety of markets. Don’t forget to try some bredele biscuits, a Christmas specialty.

iOS 10 unveiled

iPhone with iOS 10

Yesterday Apple announced iOS 10 at their developer keynote. The new OS packs new features and facelifts of existing apps. Here are our favourites:

Messages gets a huge makeover with lots of new features – a new instant emojification feature which will change the relevant words to emojis, bubble effects like smaller and larger text, balloons and fireworks, stickers. Competitor apps such as Facebook’s Messenger, Line and WhatsApp have had these features for a while so Apple’s playing a bit of catchup here.

Redesigned Lock Screen with 3D touch and a “clear all notifications” button.

Siri is being opened up to developers which means you’ll be able to say ‘Hey Siri – send a Whatsapp message to Fred and tell him I’m on my way’. A handful of apps including Slack, Uber and Skype are confirmed already to support this.

Photos gets a big upgrade with automatic grouping of similar photos. There’s also a new ‘Memories’ feature which will automatically generate videos combining your photos and video clips and sync it with music.

Apple Music gets a facelift with de-cluttered design and better visualisation of cover art and song lyrics.

Phone now has the ability to convert your voicemail to text. A new API is available which could alert you of possible spam calls and warn you before you pick up. VoIP apps like Skype can also now have full screen calling notifications – just like the default Phone app has.

… and finally – you can now uninstall some of the stock Apple apps. Time to delete that Stocks app you’ve only ever opened once!

iOS 10 will be available as a public beta from next month, and available to everyone as a free download from Autumn. All devices which can run iOS 9 can upgrade with exception of iPhone 4S.
