Fuel Efficient Trucking 101

The National Statistics Office reports that 24% of UK greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is from transportation. Transportation is the second leading source of GHG emissions in the UK, just behind energy supply. More specifically, trucks contribute to 5.28% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. But since the trucking industry is a vital backbone of the UK economy, how can we reduce emissions, whilst continuing to move the industry forward and save costs for truckers and trucking companies?

Emissions generated by the trucking industry are not just an environmental concern: fuel efficiency also saves hard-earned money. In an industry where profit margins are getting ever smaller, every diesel drop counts.

How Fuel Efficient Trucking Can Help Your Business

In the last few years, regulations regarding emissions in the trucking industry have become stricter. Additionally, diesel prices have been on the rise again in recent months and since fossil fuels are a finite resource, this is an additional long term concern. Increased fuel efficiency, which reduces emissions, is not just a way to address environmental concerns, but also a way to save money.

From Theory To Practice

Enough with the grey theory….how can we put increased fuel efficiency into practice? Big companies as diverse as Coca Cola and Tesla are looking at ways to make trucking more efficient. Several models of hybrid trucks and fully electric trucks are being tested or are already deployed on the streets. Additionally, the design of a truck can help reduce fuel consumption by using aerodynamic modelling. Another aspect is engine efficiency and using filters to reduce emissions. So-called platooning is also being trialled in the UK at the moment to increase sustainability in the trucking sector:

However, not everyone can immediately afford to purchase the newest hybrid truck on the market. Fortunately, there are some practical tips for drivers to get more miles out of a full tank. First, remove additional weight from the truck to reduce overall fuel costs. Second, maintain a steady speed while driving, use cruise control and minimise idling time, to further decrease fuel consumption. And finally, plan efficient routes with dedicated truck-specific sat-nav to limit out-of-route mileage.

How Can CoPilot Truck Increase Your Fuel Efficiency?

CoPilot Truck allows you to plan trips that are optimised for your vehicle, your load, and the number of stops you need to make. Save money by reducing fuel usage with less time wasted on out-of-route miles. In addition, you can enter up to 100 stops and CoPilot Truck will calculate the most efficient route by organising the stops into the most logical order…

What’s New in Apple’s iOS 11

Apple has launched iOS 11 and we had a closer look at some of the new features and changes (see our WWDC overview here >). Here’s what’s new:

Do Not Disturb While Driving

“Do Not Disturb While Driving” is a fantastic new feature from Apple that will enhance driver safety by blocking incoming calls, messages and notifications while you’re on the road. Our developers have been driving with the feature already and really liked it. It’s similar to the night time feature “Do Not Disturb” that is currently available under iOS 10. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and you will be able to choose from three options:

  1. Automatically: The “Do Not Disturb” feature will be activated once your device recognises that you’re travelling at a speed which would suggest you are driving or in a vehicle (this could also activate while you’re on a bus or in the passenger seat, so use with caution).
  2. While Connected to Car Bluetooth: “Do Not Disturb” will be enabled if you are pairing your device with a Bluetooth car stereo. This has the advantage that it won’t enable if you are a passenger in a car or using another form of transport.
  3. Manually: Lets you turn the feature on an off manually

Once “Do not disturb” is enabled, you will see a message notification on your Lock Screen or in your pull down notifications screen that says “You will not receive Notifications while you are driving”.

How does this affect your drive with CoPilot? Most drivers use their device with CoPilot in foreground. However, for those that use CoPilot in the background, you will still be able to get voice-guided navigation if you enable it within the app. Open CoPilot and go to Settings > Data & Battery > Battery Usage > Enable background voice instructions.

More Control Over Location Services

Users will now have more control over apps accessing their device’s location services. If you have an app that uses location service, you will get prompted to choose from three options: Always, While Using The App, or Never. The good news is that this doesn’t affect CoPilot (yeah!). We have already allowed users to select the option ‘While Using The App’ in the past, not like some other apps 🙂

Shiny New App Store

The App Store has a new look and feel under iOS 11. Open the App Store app and you will now see promoted in-app purchases for apps that offer them, a new “Today” section and promo texts.

Updated Control Center

Good news for all Control Center fans, iOS 11 will bring the option to customise its appearance. To personalise your UI experience, go to Settings > Control Center > Customise Controls. Tip: Add the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” control to the Center so you can switch the feature on and off with less taps.

Improved Screenshot Tool

Press the power + home button  and you will see the screen flash and a sound (as usual). Then a small thumbnail preview of the screenshot will appear. Tap on it and you will be able to edit the screenshot (write, draw, crop). If you decide to edit it later, you can still do so by going to your camera roll and choosing the Markup tool.

You want to try iOS 11 for yourself? Download the software update for your iPhone or iPad as follows:

  1. Make sure you have WiFi enabled and enough device space
  2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  3. Tap Download and Install

What’s New in Android Oreo

The next version of Android has been released and there are some neat changes in store for you. We had a look and here is what’s new:

Picture-in-Picture

This feature has been available on iOS for some time, so it was time Google stepped up its game. Android users can now keep a video playing (for example from Youtube) while performing other tasks on the phone (for example check your Facebook). Great news for all the multitaskers out there.

Notifications

Android Oreo brings more control for users over the app content in their notification panel. Additionally, you will now see “notification dots” attached to the app icon if there is a notable update.

New emojis

Blush_200px.gif

Last but not least, Google (finally) said goodbye to the legendary blob faces and adopted the universal round Emoji faces. We sort of liked them although it was not always clear what the Emoji you sent actually meant, making chats more adventurous than they should be.

Background activities

Google has limited what apps can do while running in the background. The Android devs hope that this change will bring longer battery life and improved performance. No worries, this does not affect your CoPilot app.

So how can you get the new OS update? If you don’t have a Google Nexus or Pixel phone and you can’t wait to try out Android Oreo, don’t worry. Google has recently launched “Project Treble” which allows users of other manufacturers to adopt new Android OS updates faster. What do you think of Android Oreo?

Safe, Safer, Safest – Innovations in Truck Safety

In the last few years, the trucking industry has undergone some serious changes: From the emergence of electric trucks (see Mercedes, Tesla) to the digitalisation of the truck cabin. But what about innovations when it comes to safety?

In the UK, there were 1708 bridge strikes in 2013/2014. According to Network Rail, this is a 9.9% increase compared to the previous year. When it comes to road accidents involving trucks, the numbers aren’t much better. A 2013 study in the UK reported that,

“More than half of fatal accidents on motorways involve HGVs, despite HGVs only making up 10% of the traffic on motorways” (Source)

Needless to say, truck safety is a vital issue for truckers and road users in general. So, what are some of the innovations that can help improve road safety?

I Spy With My Little Eye

One of the biggest safety concerns for truck drivers are blind spots. The most obvious help for a driver’s visibility are the good old mirrors. For increased safety, drivers should install the full set of mirrors including front projection mirror, side close proximity mirror, wide angle rear view mirror and of course the plain rear view mirror. Additionally, truck drivers can use blind spot detection systems. Ultrasonic sensors can detect obstacles in the rear, front corner or side of the vehicle and warn with an alarm. Plus, there are side view and 360 degree cameras that provide the driver with visibility when reversing or performing a difficult turn. Some manufacturers have gone a step further and trialled a rear screen that helps car drivers overtake trucks. Samsung has shown how technology can help all road users:

Driver Controls

What are some of the safety systems the big truck manufacturers have been integrating into their vehicles? Thanks to advanced camera, GPS, radar and sensor technology, truck drivers can take advantage of a variety of systems to help them arrive safely.

Cruise control anticipates the road and vehicle traffic ahead; Lane departure warnings alert the driver if there is an unintended lane change; Vehicle stability systems help keep the truck in balance in case of a sharp turn; Advanced braking warns the driver if there is an obstacle ahead and will brake if the limit is exceeded.

Do You Know Where You’re Going?

We’ve come a long way since paper maps. Since the emergence of PCs in the 90s and mobile devices on the 00s, fleet management and trucking has changed significantly. The humble paper map has been replaced by mobile devices that not only show you a map but give you instructions, warnings and optimised routes.

Mobile truck-specific navigation apps have been available for many years now, but some drivers still use satellite navigation that is not suitable for larger vehicles. The danger? Directions from a car sat-nav will route you down narrow roads or bridges that are truck-restricted. The best case is a hefty fine, the worst case an accident with vehicle damage or even injury. So make sure you are using navigation and routing suitable for commercial vehicles.

Drive safely 🙂

On the Move This Summer – Part 2

Need a map that fits your phone?

So he made sure to download the UK, France and Iberia maps. With CoPilot Caravan they’ll never lose reception plus they can save more money for their adventures instead of a big data bill.

You may be asking yourself, so it’s a nice trip – what’s different here?

Safe, reliable routing is a must-have for campers

Joe and his wife have used other sat-nav apps before but ran into the problem no camper ever wants to have…being routed down a road that is not safe for a caravan or motorhome. It does happen, but it should never happen to you.

How does Joe avoid this? He simply enters the vehicle dimensions into CoPilot Caravan and creates a routing profile specific to his vehicle. Wait, you can put in your exact weight, height and length in CoPilot Caravan? Yep. And you won’t be routed down an unsafe road? Yep.

Every trip you take is a journey and with all the planning – the journey will soon become your destination. Enjoy the adventures, appreciate the time with your family and by the end of it…you’ll be planning the next one. Get CoPilot Caravan and start your next journey!
