What’s New in Apple’s iOS 11

Apple has launched iOS 11 and we had a closer look at some of the new features and changes (see our WWDC overview here >). Here’s what’s new:

Do Not Disturb While Driving

“Do Not Disturb While Driving” is a fantastic new feature from Apple that will enhance driver safety by blocking incoming calls, messages and notifications while you’re on the road. Our developers have been driving with the feature already and really liked it. It’s similar to the night time feature “Do Not Disturb” that is currently available under iOS 10. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and you will be able to choose from three options:

  1. Automatically: The “Do Not Disturb” feature will be activated once your device recognises that you’re travelling at a speed which would suggest you are driving or in a vehicle (this could also activate while you’re on a bus or in the passenger seat, so use with caution).
  2. While Connected to Car Bluetooth: “Do Not Disturb” will be enabled if you are pairing your device with a Bluetooth car stereo. This has the advantage that it won’t enable if you are a passenger in a car or using another form of transport.
  3. Manually: Lets you turn the feature on an off manually

Once “Do not disturb” is enabled, you will see a message notification on your Lock Screen or in your pull down notifications screen that says “You will not receive Notifications while you are driving”.

How does this affect your drive with CoPilot? Most drivers use their device with CoPilot in foreground. However, for those that use CoPilot in the background, you will still be able to get voice-guided navigation if you enable it within the app. Open CoPilot and go to Settings > Data & Battery > Battery Usage > Enable background voice instructions.

More Control Over Location Services

Users will now have more control over apps accessing their device’s location services. If you have an app that uses location service, you will get prompted to choose from three options: Always, While Using The App, or Never. The good news is that this doesn’t affect CoPilot (yeah!). We have already allowed users to select the option ‘While Using The App’ in the past, not like some other apps 🙂

Shiny New App Store

The App Store has a new look and feel under iOS 11. Open the App Store app and you will now see promoted in-app purchases for apps that offer them, a new “Today” section and promo texts.

Updated Control Center

Good news for all Control Center fans, iOS 11 will bring the option to customise its appearance. To personalise your UI experience, go to Settings > Control Center > Customise Controls. Tip: Add the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” control to the Center so you can switch the feature on and off with less taps.

Improved Screenshot Tool

Press the power + home button  and you will see the screen flash and a sound (as usual). Then a small thumbnail preview of the screenshot will appear. Tap on it and you will be able to edit the screenshot (write, draw, crop). If you decide to edit itlater, you can still do so by going to your camera roll and choosing the Markup tool.

You want to try iOS 11 for yourself? Download the software update for your iPhone or iPad as follows:

  1. Make sure you have WiFi enabled and enough device space
  2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  3. Tap Download and Install

You can store maps directly on your device, but you don’t need to download all of the maps at once thanks to our intelligent map management. Once you’ve licensed a region such as Europe, you can manage which regions/countries, for example UK & Ireland, you need maps for and save a lot of space on your device.

Map Coverage

You can find a complete list of all the countries included in our European apps here >

*The latest maps are available for your licensed region only. Due to the increasing size of our Europe maps, we had to remove Turkey and Russia from our Europe map region. However, if you have a licence for European maps, Turkey and Russia continue to be available as an individual map region that can be used in conjunction with Europe.

Every Trip Is a Journey – Part 2

Can you walk the walk?

When you are in Ireland, you might want to get outside and take a look around the beautiful scenery. But how do you get around? Walking mode on CoPilot will navigate you even without a car. Tom used the walking mode at least 3 or 4 times to stay on track and not get lost on a Dublin side street after a visit to the Guinness brewery.

So you may be asking yourself: who won the super traveller award?

Tom came in first place by saving the trip with reliable navigation. The drivers of the other cars asked Tom how to get CoPilot on their smartphones so the downloads began at the next good WiFi spot (good WiFi is hard to find).

Every trip you take is a journey and with all the planning – the journey will soon become your destination. Enjoy the adventures, appreciate the time with your family and by the end of it…you’ll be planning the next one. Get CoPilot and start your next journey!

Every Trip Is a Journey – Part 1

Meet Tom. He just returned from a wonderful 2 week trip in Ireland. With 4 rental cars and 10 people – I mean come on, who doesn’t love a family vacation?

Trip planning: Where to go?

Tom used CoPilot for 18 trips to different destinations across the country. These trips included finding typical rural towns throughout his journey, provided Tom spelled them correctly. With CoPilot he just had to type in the name of the place and the city…it’s that easy.

All of the tech savvy people had their own navigation system so they could show it off and win the super traveller award but Tom kept a low profile.  After a few trips to places like the Blue Stack mountains, the bad routes from the first car using an alternative sat-nav app (you know the one that uses WiFi and rhymes with “Oogle”)  brought everyone to a screeching halt.

This is when things got interesting…group1

His brother-in-law got kicked out of the first car and had to walk along the edge of a cliff to Tom’s car. He asked Tom to swap with him in the front car and told Tom to bring his phone with CoPilot.  I think it’s safe to say, the previously mentioned sat-nav app was not working. Driving in and out of mobile signals only leads to one thing – you get lost! With CoPilot, Tom knew he would be safe with offline navigation for the rest of the trip. Stay tuned to find out how the journey continued….

The 5 Best Xmas Markets in Europe

What better way to get in the festive mood than to sip from a warm cup of mulled wine and browse for handcrafted gifts in a Xmas market? We have selected our top 5 Xmas markets across Europe to get you in the spirit. What is your favourite?

1. Edinburgh

edinburgh-1289078_1920

Visit Edinburgh this winter for a full family program of holiday events. See a festive theatre play, find your way through the Christmas tree maze, climb on an ice wall, try  some regional products from the Scottish Market or go ice skating. We are sure you won’t get bored.

2. Barcelona

Sunglasses, beach and sangria? Barcelona might not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking about Xmas, but the city has much to offer during the festive season. Right next to the Catedral de Barcelona visit the Fira de Santa Llúcia Xmas market, take a glimpse at the big Caga Tió display and get a Caganer of your choice as a souvenir. The Catalans would definitely win the prize for strangest Xmas traditions if there were one.

3. Vienna

town-hall-1332069_1920

If you are in Vienna in November and December, there is no escaping Xmas markets. You will find stands on every street corner offering  a variety of snacks such as Lebkuchen, warm cidre and mulled wine as well as artisan gifts. The best markets are: Rathaus Christkindlmarkt, Spittelberg Weihnachtsmarkt and “Winter im MQ”. Remember to bring your hat, gloves and warm shoes as temperatures can easily fall below zero.

4. Stockholm

Scandinavia feels like the natural epicentre of Xmas in Europe, so the capital of Sweden must be represented in our top 5. Head to the Royal Palace, browse the craft stalls and snack on some pepparkaka gingerbread to enjoy some real Nordic flair. This destination has the highest likelihood of snow, so come prepared for cold weather.

5. Strasbourg

The “Christkindelsmärik” in Strasbourg dates back to 1570 making it the oldest Xmas market in Europe. Head to the capital of Alsace for beautiful architecture, hearty food and a variety of markets. Don’t forget to try some bredele biscuits, a Christmas specialty.

10 Top Tips for Driving in Winter

wintry-578740_1280
With the seasons changing, driving requires much more than just being cautious. Sometimes your car needs attention too. Here are our top tips to avoid bad surprises this upcoming season:

1. Plan your route ahead of time

CoPilot allows you to plan up to 52 different stops. This helps you visualise how long it will take you to get to all your activities and make it home in time before any inclement weather. Preview your turns beforehand and make sure to keep checking your ETA along the way. Let others know when you’ll arrive and don’t rush! Try it out in Route > Plan.

2. Stock up on things you may need

Before you get behind the wheel, make sure your car is equipped with:

  • Flashlights
  • Window scraper
  • Blankets
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Sunglasses against low sun glare
  • …and of course your phone charger!

3. Check the lights

Fall driving often means driving in low light, darkness, or inclement weather. Regularly clean your car’s lights and check that the bulbs are in good condition.

4. Refill cooling system

Check your coolant/antifreeze levels regularly before you start your drive to avoid engine damage. Make sure that the car is cooled off before you remove the cap on the coolant reservoir. Here is a handy how-to video here.

5. Check the brakes & tyres

Leaves, ice and snow on the roads are every driver’s enemies. Good tyres are therefore a must-have if you drive in the colder months. Make sure to check that the tread is deep enough and that the pressure is correct. Also look out for damage or bulges on the tyres due to glass, cuts, etc and replace if necessary. If you expect bad weather conditions in your area, you might want to invest in some winter or snow tyres.

6. Check all conditions

Weather, traffic, and road conditions will all play a major role in getting you where you need to go. Make sure to check those before you leave the house and have ActiveTraffic™ ready and activated. Find out more about ActiveTraffic >

7. Have the battery checked

The most common cause of breakdown in the colder months is battery failure. If your battery already has a few years under its belt, get it checked and replace if necessary.

8. Replace wiper blades

A clean windshield is essential for your road safety. Make sure that the wiper blades are in good condition and that the windshield washer fluid is filled up.

9. Tank half empty – Tank half full

Doesn’t matter how you see it – you need to keep half a tank of gas in your car at all times. This helps to avoid gas line freeze up as well as keeping your vehicle working during unexpected traffic or detours due to poor weather conditions. Search in Places to find gas stations on your route, tap Search > Petrol Station.

10. Stay home?

If you’re not comfortable driving in bad weather, just stay where you are and enjoy a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. CoPilot will be ready to go the next time you need to navigate anywhere.
