ALK Partners with Road Safety Charity Brake

Developer of CoPilot sat nav apps embarks on a campaign to promote safer driving with leading UK road safety charity Brake

London, UK – 24th March, 2015 – ALK, a Trimble company and a global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, announced today that it is working with road safety charity Brake to raise awareness about safer use of mobile technology when traveling by car.

Relied on by over 14 million consumer drivers and professional fleets globally, ALK’s CoPilot® sat nav apps for driving are designed specifically for in-vehicle use. Driver-friendly features such as Motion Lock prevent use of app controls while on the move, while a unique “Directions only” safety mode helps keep drivers focused on the road ahead rather than on-screen.

“We are delighted to work with Brake as part of our quest to provide a safe in-car sat nav experience on a mobile device,” said David Quin, vice president, consumer applications, ALK. “We share Brake’s concern about the potential dangers of using a phone while driving, and we are committed to setting high standards in our CoPilot sat nav apps when it comes to minimizing distraction and maximizing driver safety. We hope that together we can help raise awareness of the need for non-distracting design and use of driving apps, particularly as smartphones become increasingly part of the connected car market.”

“Sat navs should make driving from A to B a lot simpler, but as their popularity increases, so do our concerns about driving safety. That’s why we are happy to work with ALK who takes safety seriously, and we hope a similar approach to sat nav safety could be implemented across the industry,” said Richard Coteau, Brake. ”Having a navigation campaign partner who cares about driver distraction and road safety gives us great insight into sat navs, such as CoPilot, and their safety, and together we are looking forward to raise awareness around the driver distraction risks of inappropriate use of technology when in car.

Commentary from Brake / ALK Partnership Video

Richard Coteau – Senior Corporate Fundraiser, Brake

“Our partnership with CoPilot is all about raising awareness around distracted driving. As we know it’s incredibly dangerous to be updating a sat nav or texting or using your mobile phone while driving. We certainly see our partnership with CoPilot going a long way to take away from that.

Any form of driver distraction increases your chances of being involved in a crash, and research shows that it can be as dangerous as drink driving. So, the idea that people are taking the deadly risk of updating their sat nav or fiddling around with it while driving on the roads is incredibly worrying.  Again it’s one of the reasons why we’ve partnered with CoPilot because it seems like we have found a way to do this safely now.”

David Quin, CoPilot – VP Consumer Applications, CoPilot

“Driver safety is at the very heart of the design of CoPilot. Being in a car is a very unique environment and when you are designing technology for use in that environment you have to take into account the need to avoid distracting the driver. CoPilot is designed, very specifically, to help people keep their eyes on the road and not on the screen. We make sure the maps themselves are very de cluttered; we don’t try to show too much information on the screen. We try to make sure that the text and instructions on the screen are large enough to be viewed from a distance, when your phone is in a cradle and not in your hand so everything needs to be very clear and very visible. It packs in all other features you would expect from a high end system but with the convenience of your phone. We’re actually very honoured to be partnering with Brake because we feel that we share their concerns about the risks of using your phone while driving and we want to design this product to address those concerns.”

Richard Coteau – Senior Corporate Fundraiser, Brake, continues

“This idea that there is a foray of new apps being developed and that there isn’t really an industry standard for those apps is incredibly worrying. What we will be campaigning on and what we want to push forwards further is for there to be a ‘bottom’ standard in terms of safety for drivers, so that we can have safer environments for all types of road users.’

ALK Maps Arrive in Europe

Developers of CoPilot Professional launch a development platform that offers dynamic asset and route visibility to European mobile worker fleets

Princeton, N.J. – March 1, 2015 – ALK, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, announced today that its ALK Maps asset and route visualization platform is now available in Europe.

Launched in the U.S. in 2012, ALK Maps is a development platform designed to provide high-quality visualizations with precise geocoding and commercial routing for integration within enterprise applications. ALK Maps include flexible layering, which displays the map as a base layer and allows users to overlay routing, geocoding points, weather, traffic or other data as separate controllable layers. External geographic data can also be added as a vector or image layer.

“Our enterprise application partners have seen real success using ALK Maps as a platform for unifying disparate front- and back-office systems and applications,” said Dan Popkin, senior vice president of enterprise solutions at ALK. “Not only does ALK Maps increase productivity for mobile workforces by automating time-intensive tasks such as route planning and calculation of optimal driving directions, but it also empowers end customers to more effectively manage mobile assets and to mentor personnel by comparing the effectiveness of planned versus executed driver routes.”

Using the same mapping data source as its fleet navigation software, CoPilot Professional, ALK Maps can be easily integrated with web applications, mobile apps or desktop products. Its JavaScript APIs allows enterprise application developers to get solutions up and running quickly and with less overhead.

“ALK Maps is highly customizable to fit the needs of individual enterprises,” said Rishi Mehra, senior product manager, Enterprise Solutions at ALK. “Our expansion into Europe, where CoPilot Professional is well established in the Postal, Emergency Services and Utilities sectors, will bring new opportunities within our existing customer base and added value to our channel and other application developers addressing the Enterprise market.”

In addition, ALK also announced that Trimble’s Field Service Management (FSM) solutions will be replacing its current mapping system with ALK Maps globally.

“Location and mapping are vital elements for businesses with vehicles and employees out in the field to run a more efficient fleet and field service organization. We are eager to leverage the rich features and best-in-class mapping and navigation from ALK to bring added value to our customers,” said John Cameron, general manager of Trimble’s Field Service Management Division.

ALK Maps is available for Enterprise Application Developers and Corporate Customers throughout the EMEA regions.

Further information relating to ALK Maps will be available at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, March 2-5, in App Planet – Hall 8 Stand 8.1D59.

Windows 10: It’s Time to Unify Devices and PCs

microsoft-windows-10-live-verge-_0502Straight from the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington, we got the first look at Windows 10. The latest update will be available across smartphones, tablets, PCS and Xbox One.

Having Cortana on the PC was interesting to see during yesterday’s demonstration. Cortana on the PC provides a way for the user to interact with their PC with notifications from “the world’s first digital assistant.”

We also got the first look at Windows 10 running on devices, which were under 8 inches (phones and small tablets). This was something, which we app developers we were very anxious to see.

Windows 10 was demoed on a Lumia 1520. There are improvements to the Action Center with a refreshed app list and changes to the Settings page that Windows users have been asking for as well as having recently installed apps put toward the top of the Action Center.

Windows messaging interacts seamlessly with Skype, SMS and other apps. With this new update, you can move the keyboard around the screen so that it floats and doesn’t block certain parts your screen when responding to inline messages. This will probably be very popular with phablet users.

Microsoft is offering more synchronicity with the update and allows users to dismiss notifications from their devices and their PC. They also will enable their apps to work on mobile and desktop seamlessly.

The upgrade to Windows 10 will be free for any phone running Windows Phone 8.1. The first build of Windows 10 for phones will be made available to members of the Windows Insider Program in February. We’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on this platform to make the CoPilot experience even more enjoyable on Windows devices.

For more information on the Windows 10 press event head to The Verge.

Tip: Saving maps to SD card – Now available for Android users

Screenshot_2015-01-20-15-35-57It’s time to lighten up, Android fans! Thanks to our latest app update, you can now save maps to your SD card to save precious space on your device.

In order to enable the SD card feature in CoPilot, please do the following which will both enable the feature and back up any saved trips/routes:

  • First you’ll need to go to MyCopilot -> MyMaps or connect your device to a computer and access the following folder: com.alk.copilot and then your licensed region (EU, US, AU, ME, etc.).
  • Delete the maps from your internal memory and re-download them. Once you do, the SD card feature should now be enabled.

As always, we strongly recommend downloading your required map regions via Wi-Fi. Before you start, please make sure you have Wi-Fi switched on and are connected to a network with a good signal. You can also download maps via 3G/4G, although this may incur data charges from your mobile provider.

This feature is available on certain devices only and requires Android 4.4 KitKat or above.

For more information on this feature and information on how to transfer maps, Recents and Favorites check out our copilot support forum.

CoPilot in the News

tradar2Techradar – 4 stars

“This is a pretty terrific halfway house between a compromised free app and a full-fat satnav. It costs little more than £35 (with mount and charger), but offers a similar experience to a mid- to high-end TomTom or Garmin and it’s massively versatile, offering a depth of search options, view details, google searches and geotagging to find destinations that simply blows away most standalone satnavs. You can even listen to your device’s music, while you drive, with the noise reduced for hollers. A word on Apple’s changes to iOS app store pricing

appleAs many iOS users are just discovering, Apple have just increased pricing for apps sold through the app store in Europe. There’s two reasons for the increase, which only applies to apps sold within the Euro Zone and UK:

  • New rules about VAT came into force throughout the European Union on January 1st. Now VAT will be charged at the local rate of the country where the app is purchased (for example 20% in UK). Previously a flat rate of 15% was applied
  • The recent significant change in the $ USD / € Euro exchange rate

As a result the new lowest purchase price for a paid app is GBP £0.79 / €0.99. That’s an increase of between 10-15%. Apps like CoPilot which are sold at a higher price automatically increase by a similar proportion.

So we’ve taken a careful look at the impact of the new pricing, which has been automatically applied to existing apps on the app store. We’ve decided that once our current app sale ends we will be adjusting our prices to keep them as similar as possible to what they were before – in both £ pounds and € Euros.

So while the cost of many apps will be higher moving forward, CoPilot will remain as affordable as ever.

That’s less than half a tank of petrol for the whole of Europe – even with the incredible decrease in the price of oil!
