CoPilot UK Blog

Our Christmas present to our CoPilot Live v8 customers too – a free map update.

To help you drive home for Christmas and into the New Year, we are delivering a FREE map update to all of our CoPilot Live v8 Android & iPhone customers throughout Europe (Single Region and Western Europe maps only).*

The free update brings you the latest high quality street maps from our European map provider, NAVTEQ. In addition to improvements to the road network, it also significantly extends the number of roads on which CoPilot Live’s speed limit alert service is available, providing on-screen and audible warnings if you stray over the local limit.

It’s easy to download the updated maps. Here’s how:

For CoPilot Live v8 customers with single region maps (e.g. UK + Ireland) and Western Europe maps:

  • iPhone customers – Download the latest CoPilot app update (version 8.2.0.913) via WiFi from the App Store on your iPhone/iPad or through iTunes on your desktop – Please bear in mind that the UK & Ireland is still pending approval and will be available as soon as possible.
  • Android smartphone and tablet customers
    • If you purchased your CoPilot app on the Android Market, you can get our latest app update (version 8.2.0.904) from the Android Market.
    • If you purchased your CoPilot app on the CoPilot Webstore, you can download our latest app update via this link (8.2.0.904).

CoPilot Live Premium v8 customers with Europe map version of the app (Android & iOS) will get a map update in the New Year and we’ll keep you informed through this blog.

Download once for unlimited driving

Once downloaded, the maps are stored on device as usual, so you can still use CoPilot Live without roaming charges when travelling abroad.

*This map update does not apply to CoPilot Live v8 Windows Mobile, CoPilot Live Europe, CoPilot Live HD Europe and CoPilot Live Truck customers.

Give your view, write a review

We really hope that you enjoy your early CoPilot Christmas present from us. Don’t forget to write a review on the App Store, Android Market or CoPilot Live Community Forum to share your thoughts with others.

If you have any questions about this update, please read our FAQs or contact our Technical Support .

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from all the CoPilot team.

Sorry Peter, but we don’t support Windows Mobile anymore. Most of the devices based on that OS upgraded to WinPhone 7 and we don’t have any development plans for that platform.

Oh dear, after buying several versions of the windows Copilot, and buying the Truck version at over £115 I’m not amused either, you will be alienating alot of existing customers and potential customers.

Shame really because after using rivals software for years, I found Copilot to be superior, seems like unless I change my phone, I’ll have to go to one of your rivals.

Helene, what you are saying is not right! No Windows Mobile Device was ever upgraded to Windows Phone! It’s highly questionable that you are already selling Windows Mobile licenses yet but dont support it anyway?

I give you and your “marketing manager” a hint. I plan to change to iPhone at next summer. What do you think I will purchase then? If your support is that shitty, TomTom Navigator will be my first choice!

And I will tell that everyone, everywhere, always, without being asked.

So dont talk lies and support what you are selling!

Well, it appears ALK don’t get any better. Like the rest of the posts on this site, I too am a Windows Mobile user and, like the others, I too am disgusted with the lack of support from ALK. Merry Christmas to you too and thanks for nothing ALK! It just confirms my intension to buy someone else’s product next time.

In this day and age, I would have thought companies would be grateful for every customer they could get. Instead, it would appear that ALK can afford to upset a large portion of there clientele. Shame really. Good product, crap after sales service.

After what we have experienced having Windows phones I can promiss you that I will certanly NOT even consider your product for my next phone/platform as you can screw me the same way as you have done now. You do not respect your customers and our money. Downloading one chart completely jammed my CoPilot on Windows phone. No warning, no prevention incorporated in software for things like this. Shame on you!

    hi all

    I’ve updated my copilot 8 live build to 8.2.0.904 (I’ve got the UK/Ireland map-pack).

However, just to be clear, is the new mapping data INCLUDED in the app update or do you need the app update to download the new/updated maps at a later date?

I ask because the app update was I think around 14MB and I know the complete UK mapping data was more in the region of 200MB+

    Thanks,

    Gary

        Hi Helene

        Thanks for that.

Download seems to have been successful.

        A quick question though:

On my mapping list, “All of UK and Ireland” is at the top, followed by lots of other entries which sound like they should be already included in the All of UK one.

Can I just confirm this is correct (that “All of UK and Ireland” contains all the other map-packs listed after it)?

To explain, I was just concerned that the next entry in the map pack list – “Ireland” – might be Eire (Southern Ireland), while “all of UK and Ireland” was in fact UK + Northern Ireland…

        Thanks again,

        Gary

For me Co Pilot is without doubt the best sat nav system and I’ve used it for years on my phone. I suppose I’ll have to find someone else to give my money to now, very sad, very shortsighted.

        Dear Helen,

I found that you atreat Windows custumers on very unpleasant way. What should I do now when after downloading one map whole my CoPilot Live on HD2 stopped to work asking for a licence key all the time without solving the problem after I punch the key. There was no warning that downloading new map would jam the application that I paid for! Your map destroyed the product I paid you for earlier and therefore I find you responsible to fix the product you have sold to me!

Keith, just wondering, if you bought some software for Windows, and then bought a Mac, would you expect to get the Mac software for free? That’s basically what you’re asking for here – YOU made the choice to change OS, so it’s not ALK’s responsibility to transfer the license, it’s yours…

My HTC runs Windows Mobile so I am also disappointed to be ignored by CoPilot from now on, especially after having used it for years, then had to re-purchase all the maps when I changed phone a year ago. I chose another Windows phone because I need to synch with my pc and using Windows on both seems the most logical. No doubt if I switch to Android or I-Phone I’ll have to buy the maps yet again – good business plan!

    Thank you for this update!
I’m however not sure I managed to update correctly.
Could someone please inform me what the expected version of the maps would be after the update. Unfortunately I didn’t check what version I had before updating.

I’m using maps for the Nordic Countries and after performing an update of maps I have
    Data: GRD_NT.EU-Nordic-53.2010.03.2.7.1.1
    City: CTY_NT.EU-Nordic-53.2010.03.2.7.1.1.1

I downloaded just the subset Sweden to try it out and ended up with the versions
    Data: GRD_NT.EU-Sweden-57.2010.03.2.7.1.1
    City: CTY_NT.EU-Sweden-57.2010.03.2.7.1.1.1

I’m not sure what the version numbers mean but 2010.03 sounds like March 2010 or possible Quarter3 of 2010 (at best September).
Is this the version I’m expected to have after this “Christmas present “? Or am I doing something wrong. My program version after the software update is 8.2.0.904.

    Best Regards
    /Stefan

    Hi,

Thanks for the update and I certainly don’t wish to sound ungrateful but seems that the M74 (Glasgow) is missing … Google Maps have it. It opened to traffic on 28 June 2011 and was, of course, under construction for a long time before this.

Any idea when NAVTEQ will get round to updating their maps?

    Thanks

Hi Andy, I don’t know Navteq roadmap. True that the M74 was under construction long time before but if the road is not opened to traffic, Navteq team can’t map it…and processing maps takes a lot of time.

On top of the other complaints, I purchased Europe, not just Western Europe, but the whole of Europe, and this update (from the description) excludes me…

Basically the message from ALK isn’t just “screw Windows Mobile” but “screw customers who bought large map packs” – they only like cheap customers who only buy one region, and only for newer phones!

Why can’t the upgrade cover regions of the map packs, such as the UK & Western Europe parts of the entire Europe map packs? I realise we’re getting new maps next year (some time), but I’m travelling tomorrow morning, and the existing maps don’t know about toll roads in France (you can say “Avoid Tolls” but it still takes you down roads with toll stops on them), which is VERY annoying!!!

Hi Phil, all Europe update will come beginning of 2012. If you purchased full Europe, you are still licensed to get West Eu or just UK & Ireland…as you can see in My maps, you can download those regions.

For the record, I am yet another who thinks CoPilot is great but is disappointed because my phone is Windows based. Flemmings arrogance will turn in him anyway, but no reason I should have to buy a new phone just because someone else thinks Windows is ‘so yesterday’. Not many seem to be aware of this but there is a law that products must be supported for a minimum period – not just the warranty period. Maybe someone should look that up!

Dave, CoPilot 8 came out in 2009, so I think 2 years is fairly decent for software support, especially considering that Windows Phone 7 is already over a year old, you can’t expect deprecated phone OSs to be supported forever – companies definitely won’t be creating new software for WM6.5, but if ALK bring out a WP7 version then I’d expect that to be supported for at least 1-2 years (unless Microsoft themselves stop making it)

If you consider that WM6.0 is 4 years old, that is very old in terms of mobile software (do you expect software developers to still support Android 1.0 and iOS 1.0?) – I know WM6.5 is 2 years old, but that’s still old in terms of mobile OS development, I have an old Android 2.2 device that I expect software to stop working on as it’s 18 months old, but I’ve upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus (Android 4)…

I’d suggest you look at upgrading to a newer phone as you won’t find any new software for WM6.5, and companies will certainly stop developing in favour of WP7.5 which is out now

I may move onto a new phone with 7.5 in the future, but for now I intend to continue using my TG01.
If you have removed developement from the product you should not still be selling it and those of us that are registered users should have been notified and offered upgrade paths.

Echoing many of the previous comments…6 months ago you happily took my money for the Windows version, and now you “don’t support Windows Mobile any more”. On top of that, the way that I find out is by your making an offer to your customers who are NOT Windows Mobile users; I don’t recall such a high-profile announcement of you decision to drop support for Windows Mobile. I switched to using Co-Pilot because of lack of support from Tom Tom on Windows mobile devices. Now, after paying for a Co-Pilot licence, I find the same lack of support from ALK.
    Very disappointing.

As a WM6.5 user I’m disgusted at the companies position and the way it explains it’s position on this which is rubbish. They are still selling maps which they are not supporting which is a rip off. I don’t accept that they can’t keep the maps up todate even thou they aren’t developing the platform. Yes we are not giving away a free upgrade but if you would like to buy the map for the platform we don’t now support feel free.

Somebody needs to be sacked since clearly they are doing a wonderful job of alienating their customer base. Actually we are not customers now since we have been “sacked” so don’t expect we’ll come running back… unless the company accepts it got it wrong, continues map support for wm6.5 then we as a customer base may consider buying a different platform at the time of changing phones.

Like most of the other WM users I find it somewhat ironic that today you accepted my money to upgrade to Live Traffic but no longer support my WM based device. I also note that CoPilot 8 is still available to purchase for WM in your store, surely there should be some sort of notification stating that it is an obsolete product?

I am writing to share my disappointment at the ‘Christmas present’ from Alk. I was sent an e mail offering free updated maps. I have discovered that this e mail was sent to me in error – I am another Windows mobile user – and that nothing was being offered to me other than an opportunity to waste my time in finding out that Windows mobile users are excluded from this offer. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

There seem to have been at least three quite serious marketing errors here:

    1. Sending such a message to all of the Windows Mobile users was bound to create significant and widespread bad feeling, as demonstrated by the messages above;

    2. Astonishingly, CoPilot Live v8 is still available for purchase for Windows Mobile, even though we are told here that the company no longer supports this platform. The sales blurb makes no mention of the fact that there will be no future support for the product.

    3. This is the first time that I have heard that the product that I have purchased is no longer supported. I am surprised that Alk did not feel any responsibility to let its existing Windows Mobile customers know this in advance.

I would suggest that, at the very least, Alk Technologies sends an apology to all of its Windows Mobile customers, as a start in repairing the considerable damage done here.

Sorry if you were sent the email in error. A map update for CoPilot Live v8 Windows Mobile Europe customers is under consideration for 2012. My colleague Helene stated that that Windows Mobile was no longer supported , meaning that no more app updates were planned – however, a map update is under consideration, customer support is still available via our website and safety camera database updates are still made available fortnightly free of charge.

Do you mean that there will be a map update of WM Map as well? Do you have any plan when that will be avaiable?

I think that windows 8 looks great and am certainly considering buying a mobile device. I am sure I will NOT be considering Copilot for it given your position with earlier windows systems.

I share the disappointment in some of the comments above regarding Windows Mobile. I have a Windows Mobile 6.1 Phone now over 4 years old which came supplied with Co-Pilot. I’ve regularly updated since then and also bought Co-Pilot Live Premium for an Android Tablet I have. I keep the Windows Mobile phone because it will do things iPhones and Android phones won’t. And so far I prefer Live v.8 to Premium. Co-Pilot really ought to reconsider its policy of no longer supporting Windows Mobile – given the user base, you’ve stopped the support a couple of years too early in my view. Worth noting that other software providers who’ve stopped continuing development for Windows Mobile are providing their final updates for free. Pity as you have a good product (I prefer it to my horrifyingly expensive Garmin which I need for my motorbike – you could think of supplying a hardware manufacturer that makes waterproof kit for bikes, too?)

Hi Yannis, Greece is included in CoPilot Live Pan Europe and not sold as a standalone app.

To all disappointed CoPilot WM users!

The new Nokia Lumia contains a great navigation software Nokia Drive, so you dont need to buy CoPilot software anymore… I bought mine (Lumia 800) last week and im so happy with it!

I am not impressed by Copliot. Whereas with igo8 even small hamlets are listed and can be naivigated to, in Copilot it is a nightmare to get them even if they are on the database.

And now I cannot get the free map update!

    All I get is

Required file is missing. For further assistance please contact support at http://support.coplilotlive.com

    who do not respond.

Perhaps I should have taken more note of all the negative reviews before I bought las year!

I did the same before Christmas and just used the Nokia Drive for the 1st time today. I reckon it is much better and it is FREE!!!! Thanks ALK, all this made me realise I needed a new phone (word of warning though, the Lumia is not for everyone as it doesn’t have a front camera and doesn’t allow WiFi tethering).

ALK are still selling Co-Pilot for Windows Mobile, still selling upgrades for the same, and are telling us that they no longer support Windows Mobile. How many people have bought Co-Pilot WM after this decision was made? I bet that the store accepted the purchases without telling them that it would not be supported. I wonder how many many active copies of Co-Pilot under Windows Mobile there are in use at this time?

Giving away an update for Apple and Android systems but not for Windows Mobile systems surely can be described as OS discrimination.

“CoPilot Live Premium v8 customers with Europe map version of the app (Android & iOS) will get a map update in the New Year and we’ll keep you informed through this blog.”

Has this update been released yet? Can’t see it in the blog, the button for ‘older posts’ is broken…
