CoPilot Live and iPhone 4

iPhone 4iPhone 4 has hit the shops today, and the first customers to lay their hands on one are reporting problems running CoPilot Live. The issue is to do with iPhone 4’s high res Retina display.

Please rest assured that we will issue an update that fixes this as soon as possible. It will also bring the full iOS 4 compatibility that we described yesterday

We are sorry for any inconvenience and will keep you informed about the status of the update right here.

Hi, just logged on to see if there was any news on this – Am I right in thinking it’s to do with making the image *really* small and having two of them side by side at the top of the window?

Can send a screen shot of what I’m getting if that’s any help?

      Hi Andy

This is one of the issues. Thanks for the offer of a screen shot but we now have several examples.

I have been running copilot happily on my iphone 3gs since I downloaded the app.
I am now having problems on my 3GS iphone since updating the iphone to the 4.0 software.

The other problem I am having is there is no longer an exit button within the copilot app. This means I have to switch off my phone completely or else the app runs in the background if I come out via the iphone button. This is a real pain.

Will both of these be fixed?
        Regards

          Hi Allie

There is a blog posting on this site entitled ‘CoPilot Live and iOS 4 – Update’ that provides details on how to close the application without having to switch the device off.

          Hope this helps.

Hi – can’t give you an exact date for when the update will be available – it will mainly depend on how long it takes to clear the App Store approval process. However we hope will be available in days not weeks.

I take it the App wasn’t tested with the iOS 4 SDK then? Surely a problem like this would have been picked up in testing?

Nothing to do with the IOS 4 SDK as the product runs fine on IOS4 on iPhone 3g and 3GS. The iPhone4 has a completely different display with different resolutions and unlikely Apple released handsets to developers prior to release date.

I too am having the 2 small screens but in addition to this problem it is asking me to register but I do not know how to transfer my license from my old iphone to my new one.

The online instructions seem to refer to something other than an iphone.

I presume I start with my old iphone? There in the settings menu I have three headings under maintenance: reset defaults, license reset and full reset – each with an on/off button.

I presume I am meant to do something with one or all of these?

    And then what?

      Hi Simon, Try this….

      1) Uninstall by tapping and holding the CoPilot icon then tap the X
      2) Power Cycle the device

Please verify that you have enough space on your new iPhone prior to installing – this will be only for install as it requires double the space to extract on the device and install and then will use only half this space.

Please re-download CoPilot to the i-tunes again.

      1) Launch iTunes
      2) Make sure you are signed in with the same account used for the original purchase on your PC/Mac
      3) Locate CoPilot in the App Store by going into App Store then Navigation and selecting the correct CoPilot region you purchased previously
      4) Click the Buy App button
      5) iTunes will then say “You have already purchased this item, to download it again for free click OK”
      6) Click OK and the download will commence to your PC
      7) Once downloaded, connect your new iPhone to your PC
      8) If you have set iTunes to automatically sync applications (default setting), CoPilot will then be reinstalled to your iPhone
      9) If you do not have iTunes set to automatically sync applications, please click your device on the left hand side, then select APPLICATIONS tab, tick CoPilot, click APPLY then SYNC to have it reinstalled to your iPhone.
      10) Before launch, power cycle the phone and ensure you do not have it synced to your PC and Mac when you launch CoPilot for the first time
      11) If you are getting an activation error, please follow the steps bellow, if not then just continue through the wizard screen and login with your existing CoPilot ID or create a new CoPilot ID

When originally purchased, CoPilot Live UK & Ireland was £26.99 on iTunes – now it is advertised at £19.99 and doesn’t recognise that the App has already been purchased – iTunes was set to charge me another £19.99.

The software works fine in iOS4 on 3G and 3GS handsets. That’s all they were able to test it with.

Bear in mind that ALK almost certainly were not given iPhone 4 handsets for development, so they would only have been able to get their hands on one yesterday.

    Hi,

I’ve not been able to use the software since upgrading my 3g with iOS4. I hit the icon to activate, the front screen appears but no sound nothing at all, there’s a delay of perhaps 2 minutes whereupon it reverts to the home screen. Whilst the main screen is showing I’ve noticed what I can only describe as a little arrow pointed at a 45 degree angle, top right. I half recognise it but can’t think from where!

I’ve not tried to do any kind of re-set at this stage…….should I?

    I’d appreciate any assistance.

    Cheers…..Dave

Hi – quick update on the situation. We have submitted an update to Apple that fixes the iPhone 4 problem. (also adds full support for iOS4 multitasking).

Apple’s approval process for updates usually takes about a week, although we are obviously hoping that it will be sooner.

      Apologies for the inconvenience.

If you ask Apple they can expedite an update for an application that has an obvious/glaring bug like this. I know several developers who have done this (for example, Imangi released an update to Harbor Master HD for the iPad with a major bug and were able to get Apple to push the fix through the same day).

        Just letting you know.

Have you submitted the update for all coutnries, including South Africa? If so then it is good news indeed because I’ve just purchased the app but can’t use it on my 3GS with iOS4.

It takes a week to be approved? But other appz have been updated and approved, and been able to download on the same date apple released the iPhone 4. Why does yours take a week? I can’t wait that long, so how can I get my money back?

I am having a map tracking display issue with 3gs and iOS4.

Is there anything we can do to speed the process through the app store? I’m thinking emails from 1000′s of concerned app users might get them going a bit faster?

Either way, thanks for the quick update.. I bet you’re all looking forward to a nice rest now to play with your iPhone 4′s ;-)

If the app does not work with iPhone 4, then why does ALK’s website say that it does? It is completely irresponsible to say that the product works on a certain platform when you yourselves said you had never tested it. For years ALK did this with the LIVE product line for PDAs and Laptops and once again ALK released buggy code, and in this case had never even tested it. Questionable business practices at best.

You might have to cancel the poi integration a couple of times – it completes, then hangs – just hit cancel, stop copilot, then relaunch.

Could have just been a 1 off for me, but it’s now working fine!

Question for ALK – there should be an exit button on the menu – if you use the home button, copilot is still running right? Gps = battery drain??

    • andy
      Posted June 26, 2010 at 4:34 am | Permalink

I agree on this one, an exit button is needed! it’s a bit of a pain having to manually quit the app.

good work on getting the update out so fast tho.

    • Paul
      Posted June 26, 2010 at 5:16 am | Permalink

Completely agree – I was about to comment on exactly the same thing…

Initially it said the Safety Camera POIs were corrupt and asked whether I wanted to delete them (clicked yes). So thought I could update via Settings, said everything was up to date. Thought restarting might help and this is where I found that multitasking was working too well (couldn’t restart), luckily knew how to manually close (doubt all users will). Took a few restarts to sort it out properly. Definitely don’t want the faff of to have to manually close the app each time or unnecessarily draining the battery (does it automatically stop using GPS after while?).

Is there going to be an exit tab for the app. I have to turn off the iphone after using CoPilot, otherwise it runs in the backgroundand eats away at the battery.

  23. Jonny Wilkins
    Posted June 27, 2010 at 3:08 am | Permalink

Sorry, but this is awful. Every time I launch the app it asks to download camera updates, then hangs on ‘integrating updates’. You also definitely need an ‘exit app’ button. Please fix this.

    • Jonny Wilkins
      Posted June 27, 2010 at 3:11 am | Permalink

OK. After a few reboots it seems to have stopped, but an update should still prevent it happening for future users, and we need an exit option. Thanks.

Yeah I agree there needs to be an exit button. The only way to completely exit at the moment is opening the multitask bar after coming put of CoPilot, keeping your finger on the CoPilot button on the bar, clicking the minus to exit it from the bar, this also closes the App. But it’s lengthy to do this everytime.

I note that the ONLY version of CoPilot that is not Iphone 4 compatible is Copilot Europe – all of the other versions being released on the 26th.

    Update finally out….
Having moved from an 8Gb 3G to a 32GB 4, I have to say that the transition is miraculous.
It would take 10+ minutes for my 3G to obtain a satellite lock, the 4 is immediate. A route that I had saved taking us from the UK to Brittany took less than 5 seconds to calculate.
    THANK YOU!

My point really only echoes other posts on here already, but i believe it’s an important one.

Please please include some kind of ‘Quit’ or ‘Exit’ button with Co-Pilot. I’m using the iPhone3GS with the 4.0 software update, and although i’m enjoying the faux-multitasking for some apps – it’s preventing Co-Pilot from closing down. This eats the battery extremely fast, and also i get all the audio from CoPilot coming through when i don’t want it anymore.

The only way i can get it to quit is to power off the phone completely, or press and hold the copilot icon in the multitask menu, and remove it from the menu – both unacceptable methods while i’m driving.

Hi – the easiest way to turn-off CoPilot Live is using multitasking.

When you are in CoPilot Live:
      1) Click the home button (the round button on front of iPhone) once to ‘minimise’ CoPilot
      2) Double click the home button to reveal the multitasking pane at the bottom of the screen
      3) Press and hold the CoPilot icon until it begins to shake with minus sign
      4) Tap on the minus sign. CoPilot Live will now be closed.

It’s worth knowing that CoPilot Live does also switch-off GPS if you don’t move for 20 minutes btw.

We are looking into ways of making it easier to shut down CoPilot in a future update.
