CoPilot Live coming to iPhone 4

Last week, at WWDC, Apple made one of their most widely expected – and arguably most important – new product announcements of the past couple of years – iPhone 4.

Apple sets the bar pretty high when it comes to new product launches, and inevitably, there were some who were slightly underwhelmed.

Much of what was unveiled was widely anticipated thanks to the leak of an apparently advanced prototype, although some significant details were clarified, including the new higher res ‘Retina’ screen and much improved camera with ‘FaceTime’ video calling.

From our perspective, iPhone 4 is the most substantial upgrade of the iPhone hardware since GPS was introduced with the 3G.

The new model is thinner, packs an innovative antenna integrated into the edge of the case and brings better battery life. And that A4 chip – also found in the iPad – should make everything run lightning fast.

If you are thinking of upgrading to iPhone 4, there’s no need to worry about whether CoPilot Live will run on it – our current apps will do.

But we are also working on an update to take full advantage of that amazing new screen to bring you a much sharper and crisper navigation display.

Hopefully that new antenna will also bring improved GPS accuracy and reliability as well.

In addition to supporting the new iPhone hardware, we are also working to fully support iOS4 features, including background GPS and multi-tasking.

There’ll be more about that over the next few weeks – we will keep you up to date with developments right here on the blog.

I think Copilot is a serious alternative to TomTom (which I have had in several iterations since early 2003). However, one serious drawback is the inability to make use of alternative speed camera updates (eg in iPhone OS3 as Apple will not give access to core databases. is this set to change with iOS4? I mean no disrespect but your speed camera databases are HORRIFICALLY out of date here in the UK, and to be able to import more contemporary speed camera information would be a significant enhancement!

Let’s hope it works better in Ios4? I have 32gb 3GS and takes quite a few attempts to start the app?
Once started it works ok, GPS was good but after 2nd detour when I knew the way the reroute didn’t kick in?
Waiting for Ios 4 for fresh install.

      Hi there

It really shouldn’t take several attempts to start the app. May be worth contacting our support team on to see if they’ve any suggestions on how this issue could be resolved.

Do you have a date for this release? :-) I have a road trip around Europe starting 3rd July and have my iPhone 4 coming Thursday. Or if you need a beta tester…

Is there likely to be an additional charge for the app?

Also if you’re looking for beta testers I’m getting my phone Thursday and would love to give it a go.. :-)

I want to buy this for my iPhone 4 but not sure if I will need to pay again to upgrade/update when iOS 4 support is added to copilot live. I am willing to wait if necessary. Could you please confirm if we will need to pay more for the update.

I am willing to beta test if you need any.

Any news on iOS4 support. Just upgraded my 3GS and it seems a lot more responsive, and gps seems quicker too.

Please ensure that the volume level of music playing from the iPod app returns to normal after the spoken instructions are played.

I found that if you select the option to reduce the volume of the music while instructions are played, occasionally the music stays at a low volume and only return to the higher level when you quit the app by pressing the home button.

    It’s frustrating!

    Many thanks.

Are there problems with OS 4 and this app? On trying to start my 3GS, I get a quick flash of a keyboard and then the application stops on the first screen.

I’m so disappointed. I have a brand new Iphone 4 and the CoPilot Live 8 app does not work on it. The app does go on, but the display shows 2 tiny duplicates of the same copilot screen. Please fix it soon!!

ok. I am gonna hold on until all these issues are fixed.

Why don’t you also do a one off discount to get all the new iPhone 4 people hooked onto copilot? Some game apps are doing this

Please i/m not alone, got my iphone4 this morning, same as above seeing two small screens I assume this is because of the high rez screen. Just wondering if this new version currently in for apple approval for the ipad (CoPilot HD) is the one that will be working with iphone 4. If so I hope you will be offering either free upgrade or minimal cost as opposed to having to rebuy the app at full price

Hi, I’m unbelievably disappointed with this, I’ve had copilot working with zero issues on an iPhone 3G for well over a year, now I get an iPhone 4 and suddenly it doesn’t work, I sincerely hope a free update is coming in the next few weeks or I’ll be giving my money to tom-tom Tom.

I am no marketing wizzard but you ALK guys better quickly update your website, support pages and AppStore product details darn quickly or you will lose a lot of good faith over this iPhone 4 incompatability issue. We tryst you to fix it (at no charge for existing purchasers) but why no public message, not even after all the negative reviews you getting from eager iP4 owners. Get a PR message out quick!!

Guys – chill out all of you!!!

As I see it, the app is OS4 compatible, just the higher resolution of the iPhone 4 caught ALK out….

Relax, take a deep breath, and be sure that the guys will have this fixed in next to no time.

And before anyone say anything about testing – well, it’s been out for a day, and no-one, even ALK have a chance to get their hands on the higher-res iPhone 4.

CoPilot is a great product, and still beats all the others hands down.

So it doesn’t work immediately? – it’ll be fixed – it’s not the end of the world you know.

    My 2 pence worth!

I have a 3G, updated to OS4 and tried co-pilot for 1st time tonight. 2 failed startup attempts with flash of keyboard appearing on screen then the twin screen issue reported. Thats in a 3G, NOT iphone 4.

App is unusable. This is an OS4 issue, not a screen issue.

I had this for my HD2. Loved it. I even bought it. Since I saw it was compatable with iphone4, I ordered my iphone and downloaded the free version. I too am getting the double screens.
Here’s the problem, I’m on a trip in the mainland. I was using my HD2 to navigate. Now that I have the iphone, I can’t do that and I’m a bit lost. In both sense of the word.
Btw, I tried using my HD2, but since I no longer have the carrier (T-mobile) your program is behaving badly. Either I get no gps, or I do, but it keeps jumping around. I have no idea why except that maybe the HD2 relied alot on agps for it’s gps lock.
    Please help!

I’ve just installed this App on my new iPhone 4 having had it on my 3GS, however it doesn’t work properly now. When I start it up it now duplicates itself by showing two identical versions of the menu screen side by side but just in the top half of the screen and in really small resolution, no matter which way the phone is orientated.
Also the menu buttons don’t work and to use them you have to guess and press in the bottom completely black half of the screen. I’m wondering if this is due to the iPhone 4 having more pixels than the 3GS, but there doesn’t seem to be any mention of this problem anywhere else on the Web, I’ve uninstalled it and reinstalled it and that didnt work either, anyone know of any solution? Thanks

So, they draw their widgets to the screen (because this is cross-platform code?) in a way that makes assumptions about the resolution of an iPhone screen. An assumption the iPhone4 breaks. So now we get alternate lines of the image next to each other in the top 1/4 of the screen. But the areas of the screen we should see these widgets in are still sensitive to touch, so the code for the touchscreen is correct. Should be a simple thing to fix. We just have to wait for them to do so and Apple to approve the update into the AppStore, right?

I had an original iPhone before, but wanted at SatNav app on my new iPhone 4 for this Saturday, to take my eldest daughter to a University open day. I bought Co-Pilot as it looked the best, but it just doesn’t work, to the point of not being fit for purpose. Not sure how the AppStore works with British Distance Selling legislation, so I hope they get this fixed very soon =O(

Why hasn’t ALK said anything about this officially yet?

IPhone 3G running OS4. Multiple failed startup attempts, flash of keyboard and when it did run I had twin screen views. Also sat nav location was extremely erratic and app was unusable. Resorted to googlemaps.

Didnt have a problem on OS3 with 3G

    Hi there, it’s fantastic news that Iphone 4 is out and is much new and improved from the brilliant 3gs. But 1 thing I do wish to know is this;

I have used both Tom Tom and CoPilot and believe yours was the better product as the Tom Tom was very slow and delayed when it came to turning into a corner or different road on the 3gs. But then Tom Tom released their Improved GPS Car Kit device which made a significant improvement, now as I am still on the side of CoPilot being the better sat nav application on the iphone I was wondering when (or if ever) shall you be releasing your version of the Tom Tom Car Kit? As this would make the product untouchable in my opinion in the sat nav smartphone market.

I found a soluation – delete the app and reinstall – its seem to help

HOWEVER – its now not letting me shut down the app

How does one shut down the co-pilot app in iphone 4 – if you click the homebutton and then click back on the icon it shows that it has been running all the time in the background which trashes the battery – in addition the phone heats up super red hot

i attempted to update the speed cameras and it askedme to restart co-pilot – no can do
