Herbie Goes Bananas! Stunt Show

Guest blogger, Phil “Hollywood” Hatton has taken on another crazy challenge
Phil "Hollywood" Hatton

If you were to Punch in the postcode, PE37 7QE on your CoPilot you would almost certainly find yourself at a small oval Race Track called ‘Swaffam Raceway’ deep in the heart of Norfolk.

Having recently finished my last stunt, for Channel 4/ E4 as Evel Knievel in the Redbull Flugtag, and sporting a cool scar for my efforts. I found myself strapping into a Volkswagen Beetle ‘Herbie’ Replica for what was to be one of the craziest things I have done yet. This takes some beating! It bought back flooding memories of this time last year. When I was strapped into the back of the ‘Worlds Fastest Fire Truck’. Racing from London to Croatia. The whole journey backward averaging speeds of over 150 Mph! Nearly some 2000 odd miles with only a small harness and an alloy framed Race seat to keep me from my maker! Never again.

Well I think it was James Bond who said ‘Never Say Never’ I’m sure he can afford to, he has an army of stunt doubles. However, I have a gang of buddies all egging me on to push myself to the limits. So armed with a camera man and a prayer here I am ready to do things that your senses scream at you not to.

My purpose made ride, well not my normal Super-car ride ‘all pimped out’ this time. This was to be a Volkswagen Beetle and a couple of other totally stripped out race cars, some parked cars and a rolling caravan. To give you an idea of my speed, the race cars at the ‘Speed Weekend’ meeting lapped the circuit in seconds, I pushed the envelope to a mighty minute, stuck in 2nd Gear being tail gated until my engine blew up! Then it was the Main Event. Sporting some cool CoPilot magnetic stickers the idea for the show was that I, one Philip ‘Hollywood’ Hatton was to be chased three laps by a replica police car (no change there then!) and to ‘’getaway’’ via a crafty jump through a rolling caravan. Sounds easy enough, yikes here we go again.

So after Three laps gaining speed and momentum. I find myself being chased by a ‘Life on Mars’ Cortina Mk4 Police Car’. After my speed gaining laps, I am on my last corner, now eyeing up the Towed Caravan. Which is happily trundling along, the Grandstand straight. And I am reciting a verse of the Lords Prayer, before nailing the car at 60 mph through the back of this perfectly good caravan. Well all I remember is the neck ‘Jolt’ the engine screaming then dying, as most engine parts were now in the drivers foot well.

In seconds I was released from the car all safe and sound, job done!

A quick wave to the crowd, then in a ‘blue mist idea’ moment. I am going to finish this caravan, so I decide to run full on head butting it into submission captured in mid-flight on camera. Hence my now mild whiplash!

Our Pals at Redbull had equipped us with some cases of Redbull Energy drink to pass out to the crowd. (To keep them awake during my laps I guess!) And to any drivers that needed some ‘wings’ over the weekend.

Then after a massive clear up it was time to go and leave the guys to Race.

The life of Phil ‘Hollywood’ Hatton is sure to be short but enjoyable. And we have even been asked back next year, here we go again!!

Thanks to all at CoPilot for your continued support, and our other sponsors Redbull and ‘Team Anthony Amis’ all at Swaffam Raceway and Car Spares etc. In helping us raise money For Cancer Research at

Ps I have to lose the race overalls and get a real suit on, for I am being awarded ‘Freedom of The City of London’ for my services to charity. At London’s Guild Hall later this month so I must remember to mind my P’s and Q’s.

Best wishes, Phil ‘Hollywood’ Hatton

Hi we saw the Cars on the transportor to the Swaffam Stubtshow, the VW convertible had Copilot written all over it. We actually went to the Speedweekend and saw the show, the guys are truly mental or brave!
He hit the caravan at 65 mph the commentator said.It totally shattered, but then he got out of the totally trashed car and began running and head butted the caravan, it was sooo funny.
We are big Co-pilot fans and did not realise ALK sponsored such cool events as well as the Gumball. Impressive stuff.
