Warm weather leads to outdoor fun and what’s a better way to spend your day then riding roller coasters? Amusement Parks can be an overwhelming place but with your CoPilot app and a few of our tips, we think you can get a pretty good handle on this massive carnival.
Check the weather: Use CoPilot to check the weather before you leave, that way you can dress accordingly. It’s always a good idea to bring layers in case the weather changes once you arrive.
Park Smart: CoPilot can help you remember where you park, a feature that comes in handy after hours upon hours of being out in a crowd and in the sun.
Charging Case: Along with using CoPilot’s power saving mode, it may be worth it to invest in a case that protects and charges your phone if you’re going to be out of the house for hours at a time.
Waterproof your device…sorta: Keep your phone in a clear, plastic zip lock bag to ensure that it won’t get too wet when you’re on a water ride.
Map out the park: You know how to navigate, you use CoPilot after all! It’s easier to know where you’re headed before you get there and it saves time too! Another useful hint: Start at the back of the park and work your way to the front. Most parkgoers will start at the first ride they see which leads to long wait times for you!
Always pick a spot to meet: If anyone from your group should get lost, make sure to designate a place to meet.
And most importantly, remember to have fun!
Fireworks are a huge part of any Independence Day celebration with many towns offering spectacular displays for their citizens. Looking to find a place to catch the light show? Try your local paper or a quick Google Search to see the events in your area. Enter your destination into CoPilot, pack a couple of blankets and take in an amazing show! Here’s a list of major cities with renowned 4th of July firework showcases:
If you’re near Philadelphia: The week long Welcome America Festival boasts appearances by Kevin Hart and big names in music like John Mayer and Ne-Yo. The display of fireworks on the Delaware River can be seen on both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania sides of the river but the action happens at 10:30pm at the Ben Franklin Parkway.
If you’re near New York: Macy’s 37th annual 4th of July Fireworks show at the Hudson River is a huge draw for Big Apple patriots. With performances by top entertainers like Mariah Carey and Tim McGraw, the event is sure to be an illuminating showcase.
If you’re near Washington D.C.: Our nation’s capitol holds their celebration at the National Mall in an event they call “Capitol Fourth” complete with the National Symphony Orchestra whose music provides the perfect backdrop to a magnificent firework show.
If you’re near Addison, Texas: Kaboom Town!, a 30 minute firework extravaganza can be seen anywhere in Addison and broadcast on all 170 restaurants in town.
If you’re near San Diego: The Big Bay Boom, an annual event located at the San Diego bay, can be seen from four different locations. Make your way to Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero or Seaport Village/Coronado Landing to watch the epic firework illustration.
If you’re near New Orleans: Fireworks in the Big Easy look grand over the Mississippi River. The best part about these pyrotechnics? They can be seen from many points throughout the city which is helpful to those looking to avoid a crowded downtown area.
If you’re near Saint Louis: Fair Saint Louis invites you to take in the sight of fireworks underneath the Gateway Arch! The 3 day event kicks off with live music from Trace Adkins, Brett Michaels and the Counting Crows along with many other fun family-friendly activities.
We hope you have an amazing Independence Day wherever you decide to go!

By Rob Irving, Senior Software Developer
For the past 5+ years as an ALK developer I’ve watched the smartphone ecosystem change at an incredible pace. CoPilot first began over 10 years ago on the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile platforms. Years later we were able to move to iOS and Android as those platforms expanded the Smartphone consumer market. The release of Windows Phone 7 really excited me, but limitations of the SDK prevented ALK from being able to develop a CoPilot application for the platform. It wasn’t that we didn’t want to support the platform, but we wanted to make sure we would have been able to create an experience worthy of the CoPilot name.
That’s why I was so excited when Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 8 SDK that would allow native app development. From that moment forward, we began initial plans to bring CoPilot to the Windows Phone 8 platform.
Microsoft publicly released the Windows Phone 8 SDK at their Build 2012 conference last October – right around the same time that the east coast had been hit by hurricane Sandy. My community didn’t suffer as much as many others did in New Jersey, only experiencing a few downed trees during the storm. Unfortunately, ALK’s HQ in Princeton was badly affected and many of us had to work remotely for a few days. This actually gave me the chance to devote time to install the Windows Phone developer tools and study the SDK documentation in detail. I started working to bring CoPilot to life on this exciting new platform for us.
Now after 6+ months of late nights coding, and extensive testing on some great Windows Phones such as the Lumia 920, I and the rest of the ALK dev team are pleased and proud to see CoPilot become available to all Windows Phone 8 users on the Windows Phone store.
So what’s next?
The CoPilot development team are extremely passionate about the products we work on, and we always take note of the feedback we receive from our customers through the app stores, social networks and of course our support forum. Now that we are up and running on WP8 rest assured that we will work continuously to improve the app, so if you have any suggestions or comments please let us know.
I hope you enjoy CoPilot on Windows Phone 8. I certainly enjoyed the challenge of supporting this new OS for CoPilot.
