A Slimmed Down Apple iPad 2 is Here

apple ipad 2Following hot on the heels of last week’s announcement of the Motorola Xoom, yesterday the spotlight shifted to San Francisco and the unveiling of the second generation iPad.    As we mentioned last week, this announcement has been highly anticipated as numerous competing tablet PCS have been released following the initial launch of the iPad.  So far analysts and early reviewers seem to be saying the iPad 2 improves on the original iPad rather than offer any break-through enhancements, but it’s still the tablet to beat and is predicted to dominate the market this year.

Steve Jobs kicked off the unveiling with a few slight jabs at the competition followed by some pretty astonishing sales numbers.  Apple recently shipped its 100 millionth iPhone and sold 15 million iPads in 2010!

In case you can’t tell from the picture above, the iPad 2 is sporting a much slimmer look  at 8.8mm—a 33% decrease from the original iPad.  It’s also slightly lighter, available in both white and black and will be available from both Verizon and AT&T.  Eager fans won’t have to wait long, as the device will began shipping on March 11th.   The iPad 2 now also features a front and rear camera for video chats, a feature that most expected would appear.  The device adds a newer computer processor that will it make run faster and should give video heavy apps a smoother performance.

black and white ipad 2Pricing appears to be the same as the original, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi-only version and ranging to a $829 WiFi + 3G 64GB version.  Remember if you want to run your CoPilot Live GPS navigation app on the iPad, you’ll need the WiFi + 3G version as similar to its predecessor, the WiFi only version does not include a GPS receiver.

So the question is, will you be buying an iPad 2?
