Survey Results: PNDs vs. Mobile Navigation Apps

82% of Smartphone Navigation App Users Would Not Buy a Portable Navigation Device.  The debate of the Portable GPS Navigation Device aka the “PND” versus mobile applications on GPS-enabled Smartphones has been a popular topic over the last year.  Analysts such as the ABI Research have recently forecasted that “software will take half of the total navigation market by 2016”*.

We recently conducted a survey with 5,000 of our own CoPilot Live customers to see just how real this challenge to PND dominance is.

Survey Results:  It is very real!  82% of respondents said they would be unlikely to purchase a dedicated GPS device in the future.

Our customers seem to appreciate that today’s touch screen handsets such as the iPhone and Google’s Android-powered devices are capable of providing the same detailed mapping and voice-guided directions at the fraction of the price of a PND.  And it’s up for the job of daily navigation, with the survey also revealing that 65% of respondents use their CoPilot Live at least once a week.

You can read a full overview of the survey results here:  http://www.alk.com/press/releases/pr_020911.asp

Special thanks to all our users who contributed to the survey!

What about you?   Are you still using both your PND and your smartphone for navigation or have you forced that PND into early retirement?

After trying Copilot Live USA for a few weeks on my Motorola Droid, and seemingly endless problems with TomTom support, I sold my TomTom and have been using Copilot Live USA exclusively for about 3 months. I should have done this a long time ago.

Are there any plans for a Windows Phone 7 release? I am a very satisfied customer of CoPilot from WM who made the jump to WP7. Any plans for CoPilot to fill the gap for high quality, off-line navigation?

      Hi Eddie,

We have no plans to support Windows Phone 7 right now. Happy to hear you are a very satisfied customer though, sorry we can’t help you right now. If we do decide to support Windows Phone 7 in the future, we’ll let you know here.

      Thanks,
      Tim
