Truck-specific GPS Arrives on Android Phones

This week we announced the availability of the first-ever, voice-guided GPS navigation app that offers truck-specific guidance and routing on Android phones—CoPilot Live Truck USA & CAN. Available to download from the Android Market, the app is designed specifically for professional drivers of trucks and other large commercial vehicles and features industry-standard PC*MILER® truck-specific routing.

Truck-Legal Routing

Unlike consumer GPS navigation apps, CoPilot Live Truck takes into account truck-restricted and prohibited roads to provide drivers safe and reliable routes on truck-legal roads throughout the U.S. and Canada. Routes are automatically calculated based on vehicle size and load type to avoid commercial truck restrictions including:

  • Vehicle height, weight, width and length limits
  • Low bridge heights and clearances
  • Left-hand and dangerous turns
  • No U-turns for trucks
  • Hazardous materials restrictions

Truck-Specific Features:

  • Industry-standard truck-specific attributes from the latest release of PC*MILER 24
  • Load-specific routing including 30 different Hazmat categories
  • Generate routes based on: Practical, Shortest, 53’/102” Trailer or Twins, Hazmat, National Network and Toll Avoidance
  • Ability to create to custom route profiles for easy switching between vehicles
  • Over 7 million Points of Interest (POIs) including truck-specific categories: truck services, truck stops, rest areas, weigh stations, CAT Scales
  • Optimize routes by reordering up to 50 stops
  • Generate state mileage logs to provide an accurate record for billing and tax calculation

Plus…all the advanced navigation features and live services available in CoPilot Live!

I drive a work van registered as a commercial vehicle in NJ, with a gross weight of 6,999 pounds (< 3.5 tons). Copilot Live Truck seems like overkill for my needs, but Copilot Live (non-Truck) doesn't address issues like commercial vehicle restrictions (common in NYC) and bridge weight restrictions. Until now I have been getting by with specifying RV as the Mode of Travel when in NYC.

Vehicles like mine are commonly used by many types of contractors, but are NOT considered "Trucks" by the NYCDOT (they have different classifications for "commercial vehicles" and "trucks"), and are typically not considered "trucks" in New Jersey (they are permitted on the Garden State Parkway, and on other roads that prohibit "trucks"). It's not clear from the linked feature sheet that Copilot Live Truck addresses the needs of this type of vehicle.

The recent change to a 15 minute refund window in the Android Market, and the time it takes to download maps, combine to make it impossible to "try" Copilot Live Truck and still be able to get a refund if it is not appropriate for this type of vehicle.

Any information you can provide with regard to using Copilot Live Truck with this type of vehicle would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi UncleMike,

CoPilot Live Truck is designed specifically for Class 6-8 Trucks which have specific size, weight, and hazardous commodity routing restrictions involved with their commercial vehicle operation.

In your case, if you are not prohibited from using Parkways etc…, or fit the Class 6-8 commercial truck vehicle profile, or transport hazardous materials, I would recommend you continue to use the standard CoPilot Live solution.

    Does this help?

    Thank you,

I checked the commercial truck classifications and found that mine falls into class 2. Clearly it is well out of the truck classes for which Copilot Live Truck is intended.

In New York, any vehicle registered as a commercial vehicle is prohibited from using Parkways, regardless of vehicle characteristics. I believe this restriction is due to the lower clearance provided on Parkways, so RV mode in Copilot Live works well for me since it is also clearance based. There are also restrictions on trucks, which are identified by their physical characteristics, such as number of wheels, number of axles, etc. These two classifications are independent, but not mutually exclusive.

I believe you are right in your recommendation though, that Copilot Live in RV mode is the best choice for my vehicle.

    Thanks for clarifying.

      You’re very welcome.

And thank you for the additional information regarding the Parkways and using RV mode on the standard CoPilot Live application.
